How to Make the Perfect Smoothie Bowl — Naturally

Smoothie bowls are everywhere., and have been for quite some time now — and for good reason. They’re creamy, nourishing, and just beautiful to look at. On nearly every breakfast or brunch menu, you’ll find at least one. And once you’ve made one yourself, you’ll understand why.

But how do you create that thick, velvety texture, that makes it possible to eat it with a spoon, and top it like a pro? Here’s your step-by-step guide to making the perfect smoothie bowl at home — topped, of course, with the chunkiest, Naturally Granola.

What is a smoothie bowl?

If you're new to the concept: a smoothie bowl is exactly what it sounds like — a smoothie served in a bowl rather than a glass. But unlike a drinkable smoothie, this one’s made to be eaten with a spoon. It’s thicker, more filling, and designed to be a full meal — perfect for breakfast, lunch, or even a light dinner.

The best part? There are no limits. You can mix and match fruits, vegetables, grains, superfoods, and toppings however you like.

Step 1: The essentials

A proper smoothie bowl starts with the right tools. A powerful blender (ideally 1000 watts or more) is a must — it needs to be strong enough to crush frozen fruit. You’ll also want a good bowl, I like using one that's wide and narrow, rather than deep, because it means more toppings! And of course you will need a spoon.

Step 2: The base ingredients

Think of this as your canvas. The foundation is simple, and from here, you can add your own touch, based on whatever you have in your kitchen.

Basic recipe for 1 bowl:
• 1 frozen banana – peeled, sliced, and frozen overnight
• 250g frozen fruit or vegetables – think strawberries, mango, blueberries, spinach, courgette, cauliflower (very creamy)
• 60–125ml of liquid – choose from plant-based milk, coconut water, or even pear juice

Step 3: Toppings (non-negotiable)

No smoothie bowl is complete without toppings — they bring contrast, crunch, and beauty to the bowl.

Here are a few favourites:
Naturally Granola’s Signature Blend – full of golden chunks and naturally sweet layers
• Sliced fresh fruit
• Chopped nuts
• Coconut flakes
• Dried fruit
• Chia seeds or puffed grains
• Optional: dried rose petals for a delicate, floral finish, you can also use our Floral Fig!

Step 4: Extras (optional, but fun)

Want to level up your bowl? Try adding one or two of the following:

• A scoop of protein powder (like pea, rice, or collagen)
• A spoonful of nut butter – almond, tahini, hazelnut, or coconut butter
• Superfoods – matcha, açaí, cacao, spirulina, or ground chia seeds

Step 5: Blend to perfection

Add your frozen banana, other fruit or veg, and 60ml of liquid to the blender. Blend until thick and smooth. The less liquid, the better the texture — don’t be afraid to pause and scrape down the sides a few times.

If the blender starts to struggle, add a small splash of liquid. Patience pays off.

Step 6: Add your extras

Now’s the time to add any protein, nut butter, or superfoods you’re using. Blend again until everything is silky and combined.

Tip: want it even creamier? Nut butter will work wonders. Need more thickness? Add ground chia seeds.

Step 7: The final touch — toppings

Pour your smoothie into a bowl… but don’t dig in just yet. This is the moment to go all out.

Top with fresh fruit, a generous handful of Naturally Granola, and anything else that makes your heart happy (and your bowl crunchy).
