Making your own granola bars

Granola bars are a convenient and nutritious snack for anyone who is always busy. By making the bars with Naturally Granola you have a nutritious base, and you can adjust them to taste. In this blog I will explain step by step how to assemble your ideal granola bars. Also, this recipe is no-waste because you can use the crumbs left at the bottom of your granola bag/jar. 

Step 1-Dry Ingredients

1. Gather the ingredients you want to use

The advantage of making your own granola bars? You can choose what you put in it. This means you can use your favorite ingredients, but it also means you can dive into your pantry and make something different every time! 

You will need:
- 2 cups of granola or crumbs
- 1/4 cup nuts 
– 1/4 cup seeds/pits or fruit

Examples of ingredients you can use.

Nuts: almonds, cashew, walnut, pistachio etc. 

Seeds / kernels: hemp seeds, sunflower seeds, poppy seeds, sesame seeds etc. 

Fruits: grated coconut, figs, raisins, apricots

Flavor options: proteins, vanilla, cinnamon, orange blossom water, etc.

 

Step 2-Wet Ingredients

Here you can also play with what you have at home. But I'm going to give a slightly more concrete example here. 

You will need:
– 1/4 cup Maple syrup (agave, honey, or date syrup are some other options)
– 1/2 cup peanut butter (tahini could be good too)
– 2 tablespoons coconut oil

Step 3 - Method

3. Now you are going to mix everything together

1. You can make this in a square baking dish, or in a special pan for making bars. If you do it in a square / rectangular baking dish, line it with parchment paper.

2. Place the syrup, peanut butter and coconut oil in a saucepan over low heat. Blend it smoothly. Do not let it boil!

3. Remove the pan from the heat and add all the remaining ingredients. Mix this well so that it becomes a sticky mixture and there are no dry bits. 

4. Put the mixture in the baking dish and press well. You can use the bottom of a measuring cup to press this well. 

5. Put the baking dish in the freezer for 1 hour so that it can harden. After this you can cut the bars and enjoy!

 

With this recipe you can vary endlessly. You can make it with different types of nut butter. Add various spices. Extra protein, and chia seeds to make sure you have a real protein bar. You can even add lemon zest and month seed to make it a variation of a poppy seed bar!
